I can easily say that prior to having my website/blog, Facebook has been the most useful tool in my arsenal when it comes to growing my business. I booked my first four weddings strictly off of what my clients saw on my Facebook business page. I have the ability to access thousands of people with the click of a “share” button. I can appeal to not only my clients but my clients friends and family by tagging my brides and grooms in photos. Facebook has truly revolutionized the meaning of “word of mouth” marketing.

Seeing how much I use Facebook, I’ve picked up a few rules that I live my Facebook life by. Feel free to love or disagree with any of them!

1. Thou shalt keep thy Facebook content positive! Or at least somewhat neutral. If your Facebook page is full of nothing but negative comments, people will stop visiting after a while.

2. Thou shalt encourage others. This kind of goes along with #1- be the one that lifts people up, instead of tearing people down. It allows people feel like they’re welcome on your page.

3. Thou shalt not log in as their own business page and comment on others’ business pages as such: “Hey! Joe Bob here from (link) Uncle Bob Photography, love your work!” This irritates the business page owner, as it comes across as you attempting to use someone else’s page to generate traffic for yourself. Side note: I’m totally guilty of having done this in the past.

4. Thou shalt answer questions left on one’s business wall. Don’t leave your readers hanging! If they ask a question, do your best to to answer it. If you can’t answer it, at least acknowledge that they asked.

5. Thou shalt not be too polarizing in their posts. AKA don’t post something that says “I love the Dallas Cowboys and anyone who doesn’t is WRONG.” Share that on your personal page, where it doesn’t matter if someone de-friends you over it. The last thing you want to do is make your audience feel like you’re on different sides. You want an “us” mentality, not a “me vs. them” mindset.

The Ten Commandments of Facebooking for Business, part 1

December 19, 2011

  1. These are good! I agree whole heartedly! I try to only post things that are positive, I know I’m not always perfect but with a business page it’s even more important to filter what you post.

  2. Awesome post! Totally agree with #5.

  3. Stephen says:

Uncle Bob’s photography does not approve this message.

  4. Jean Hensley says:

Great advice for anyone on Facebook.

  5. Totally guilty of #3 at times, and yes, it does irritate me also! Great post, looking forward to tomorrow’s!

  6. Abby, love your post! These are great tips, especially for someone like me who is new to the business and trying to grasp the Facebook do’s and don’ts. P.S. I love the Dallas Cowboys : )

  7. Dylan says:

Completely agree with #5 and im pretty sure if you love the dallas cowboys you are a bad person.

  8. […] Welcome back! Sorry about all these multiple-part posts recently, I just get excited about ideas and want to share everything! Typical disclaimer: these tips are what works for me. If you feel differently, no worries. I’d love to hear what works for you! So continuing on from yesterday’s Part 1 post… […]

  9. Shauna says:

Hah! So guilty of #3 only because I liked the page as my business so now I need to go back and like it on my personal page. Very good point and good post.

  10. […] for me as a small business owner. You all already know about my love affair with Facebook (parts 1 and 2), but it’s time to tell you about my other best friend: Twitter. It’s become one […]
