This session was like a dose of caffeine for my creative brain- the color! The patterns! The unexpected combinations of textured and motifs!

Brittany is the founder of the The Pattern Collective in New Orleans, Louisiana and her artistic intuition is unparalleled. I always ask my clients for a video tour of their space ahead of time so I can map out my shot list with an idea of dimensions, windows, etc., so I thought I was prepared for the riot of color. But walking into her space for the first time on shoot day was even more joyful than expected! Brittany has such a gift for curating unexpected options from independent designers all over the world, which makes a visit to her studio such an experience. The designers whose work she carries can’t be discovered in big box stores, so her studio feels like a treasure trove of best kept secrets.

After photographing the first part of the day at the Pattern Collective studio, we headed into downtown NOLA to photograph Brittany at her home. She has something like a dozen+ different patterns throughout her home (wait til you see the one in the laundry room!), giving the house so much depth with how she’s bedecked the walls of each room!

The biggest challenge of this full-day session was lighting- with all the color, I wanted to make sure the light was clean in order to accurately represent what you’d see in real life. My Profoto lights got quite the workout, along with the smaller, more mobile modifiers in my bag (thank you, 24″ octabox).  The studio’s layout is really unique which made lighting placement a fun game, but we got it done and I’m so proud of the results!

Brittany, what you’ve built is incredibly inspiring to behold. You posses so much grit and creativity, it’s obvious why your designers and clients return again and again. Thank you for the opportunity to witness your creative genius for myself, and for the chance to add so much color to my folder of portfolio highlights! I can’t wait to watch your fan base continue to expand!
