I don’t know about you, but from approximately age 13 to 21, I was incredibly insecure. Actually, I still have moments like that. Frequently. Insecure about my skin, my figure, my photography, you name it. My mom always told me I was beautiful, but you know how that is. “You only say that because you’re my mom and you have to.”

What I didn’t know, or rather, couldn’t grasp, was that I had this incredible intrinsic value, simply because I, Abigail Grace, was uniquely made. This crippling insecurity bled into every area of my life. Forming and keeping friendships, dating guys I shouldn’t have just because I craved the attention and approval, everything. It wasn’t until I really started walking with Jesus (and took a break from dating) that I began to feel worth people’s time.

The point of this story is that I KNOW how it feels to starve for attention, to crave approval, and to rely on others to find your worth. I have this passion to work with young women to help them find a healthier place than I was in during middle school, high school and most of college. To some it may seem superfluous, but I think great photography can work wonders for a girl’s confidence. When I see a good photo of myself, it’s easier for me to believe in the value I know I hold.

This past Sunday, I got together with the high school and college girls from our church to take them out for a day of playing in front of the camera. I just asked that they wear something that makes them feel GOOD. From the smiles and gorgeous smeyezing I’ve been poring over for the past few day, I think it worked.

Catie, Alexa, Kate, Bethany, Emmi, Kristen, Gabrielle, Alyssa, Jackie, Natalie, Jessica, Victoria, Ashley, Brittney, Laura and Meagan- you girls are so beautiful. Thank you so much for allowing me to drag you around for an evening, and if even one of you feels a bit more confident in your identity in Christ, we accomplished something. I love you all!

In case you’re wondering, they were playing Concentration. With names. I suggested Barrabas- I think thats when it fell apart.

I realize the below-right image is the only one in B&W, but it just HAD to be! Alexa, you look like you belong in 1940. I love it!

I learned that Bethany is a proficient juggler. Also, that when Alyssa attacks her with lipstick, she doesn’t respond well.

Abby! These are absolutely gorgeous! God is using you in such a powerful way and I couldn’t be more proud to call you my friend! These girls will treasure these pictures for a lifetime.

  10. Elizabeth says:

Abby, you are amazing. Not only because you are an incredible photographer, but because of the HEART that you have… which in turn you put behind every single photo you take. What a powerful way to minister to girls… simply to take their photo! Gee, I don’t know a single woman that doesn’t struggle with insecurity, but, the teen years are by far the hardest! You just feel so… awkward :-p What people tell us about ourselves (whether it is our mom or someone else!) doesn’t always match what WE feel about ourselves. A photo, though, gives you another view of yourself. If it’s bad, then you see yourself as “ewww!” if it is good, you might actually find yourself saying “aww, that’s pretty.” That’s what I love about photography – it captures the beauty that we may not normally see around us.
When I am having a bad day, and am feeling ugly or out of shape or whatever else, a lot of times I will look at my wedding photos. Those photos are beautiful… and photos don’t lie! That’s ME in those pics. You didn’t put someone else’s body or face in there, you didn’t crop out my eye or smile or arms… it’s me. And I’m beautiful. It’s really cool to have a reminder like that 🙂

Good grief, I rambled :-p guess you just touch my heart, and I HAVE to tell you about it. You leave such an impact on people, Abby, and are such a blessing!

  11. Stevie Glor says:

    Robin
