Maybe it’s cliché, I don’t know. But my favorite dates are the ones that take me to a theater. As a kid in a family of five, going to the movies was a treat- we’d only go every once in a while, but when we did, my parents always made sure we did it right with popcorn, Skittles and Sprites to go around. When I was in middle school, my friends and I spent almost every Friday night at Reston Town Center, seeing this awesome movie or that terrible one. Being in college was the best- every weekend at the Bonnie (our student center) they’d bring in a movie that had just left theaters and tickets were only $1 with your student ID. I saw SO many movies that way!

I didn’t really go on dates to the movies until Matt & I met- we actually DTRed (determined the relationship) while we were in the theater waiting for Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince to start playing. Surrounded by 20 of our friends, I may add. At first I tried to keep track of all the ticket stubs from each of our movie dates, but it got to be too many after a while so I gave up. But Matt knows that if I’m down in the dumps and need a pick-me-up, there are two cures: 1) Big Bowl restaurant, and 2) a movie date :).

These days, one of our favorite things to do on weekends that I don’t have weddings is to go to an early showing before noon- there are a couple of theaters in the area that do $6 tickets, so then I totally feel justified buying popcorn. Popcorn and lots of extra butter [salty oil dyed yellow]. And sometimes Sour Patch Kids.

We watch movies at home all the time, but there’s just something about seeing one in a theater that gets me really excited! I love the process of buying our tickets, I love settling into our seats and watching the awful pre-preview advertisements for holding your kid’s birthday at the theater, and my blood pumps just a little bit harder when they finally turn the lights down to indicate they’re about to begin. I think it has something to do with my love for retro Americana-type things, and movies have been a staple of our culture for so many years. Sometimes I think I was born in the wrong decade- I feel like I should have grown up in the 40’s, right around the WWII era.

What about you guys? What was the last movie you saw in theaters?

Everyone Loves a Classic- date night at the movies

  1. Sarah H. says:

Greg and I saw The internship a few weeks ago at the movie theatre on post. It was a nice little date that felt very American 🙂

  2. Lena says:

Fun fact- Brent and I over our period of dating (4 years) have never seen a movie in the theater together! We watch plenty at home but have never gone to see one. I love movies in the theater though, something about seeing it on a big screen makes it 10x better!

  3. Sabrina says:

We LOVE going to the movies too!! We had a mid-week date on Wednesday to see World War Z… I know, I know. When we first saw the preview, I looked at Ben and told him no way was I going to see that! But… The Walking Dead got the best of me so WWZ it was 🙂 It was actually pretty good too!

  4. Bethany says:

Ray & my favorite thing to do is Saturday morning matinees 🙂 We just saw Despicable Me 2 which was hilarious and thankfully, the theater was filled with well-behaved children. But my favorite is AFI Silver Theater is Silver Spring, MD. They show both American & world films including independent/art movies. Its a gorgeous theater and always makes me feel like we should be back in the 40’s when everyone dressed up and made a night out of going to the movies!

  5. Regan Carter says:

Ah I love this! I am so with you – I am one of 4, so going to the movies as a kid was a HUGE treat! It’s such a fun deal to get to the movies even as an adult! My first date with my hubby was to the theater (to see I am Legend, which was god-awful, I might add!) Over here in Lynchburg we have a dollar theater which makes those popcorn purchases justified! 🙂

  6. Taylor says:

My fiance and I are the same way! Movies are a part of us, our relationship, and our happiness. We love going to the movies, but it is definitely a treat at this point in life. We are even incorporating our love for movies into our wedding. SO excited about how it’s turning out!

  7. Rachel Wells says:

I LOVE going to the movies!! It’s definitely my favorite date night and we sneak lots of candy into my giant duffel bag of a purse….never popcorn, though! Gotta have it fresh. Also, Thad and I talk all the time about how awesome it would’ve been to grow up in the 40s!

  8. Megan says:

We love going to the movies too! And one of our first dates was a cheesy movie date to an awful movie I can’t even remember 🙂 We just went on a movie date Monday night and saw The Lone Ranger… since obviously we are like little kids!

  9. Jean says:

We went to see “the Lone Ranger” with Your brother, Seth. Loved the movie. Your Pawpaw and I like to go to matinees and then to dinner afterwards. Sometimes we fill up on popcorn and then just go for a light dinner, but popcorn is a must!

  10. Karen Field says:

Your Dad and I saw The Lone Ranger this week. Neither if us were thrilled with it but it was fun. Austenland is coming in a month or two. Totally will see that in the theatre!

  11. Rebekah Hoyt says:

I’m not a big movie-goer – I LOVE watching movies in the comfort of my home, with a bowl of ice cream in-hand and remote by my side so I can pause, change the volume or do whatever I want! And to be comfy on my couch… love it! BUT when there is a movie that deserves a big screen, I go and I’m always SO glad when I do! Last movie I saw in the theatre was Les Mis and it was truly amazing on the big screen!

  12. Sarah Adams says:

love movie dates 🙂 holding hands in the theater will never get old 🙂

    just saw The Heat. HILARIOUS.

  13. Ohmygosh! I LOVE this post! It completely describes how much I love the movie going experience. My husband isn’t a crazo about the theatre like I am but now I can finally explain it to him by sending him this blog post! Sadly, I haven’t been to a movie since Shiloh was born. She was too fussy at night in the beginning and that is when most of my friends were going. I don’t really know what the last movie I saw was. I can tell you I secretly hoped she be late so I could go see the last Twilight movie. Haha!
