Go ahead and call me a hypocrite for this one. It’s true.
My VA alone knows how many times I’ve gently declined to work with medical practices. “I specialize in brand sessions for creatives- designers, authors, photographers, even travel agents!” But doctors?
Nope. That sounds boring.
That is, until Dr. Hartman’s inquiry landed in my inbox.
Dr. Aaron Hartman is the founder of Richmond Functional Medicine. I’d heard about his method from what my friend Katelyn has shared over the years with their family’s journey to clean eating + products, and what a difference that’s made in their health. So I knew this was a typical family practice we were talking about.
And then we got on the phone, and any traces of “can I do this?” vanished. Dr. Hartman started to share his approach and how his own family’s story has shaped where and how he looks for medical solutions. He said something that immediately hooked me: “People get sick because we ignore the fact that we came from dirt.” And the ideas began to arrive hard and fast. I knew I NEEDED to shoot this session.
Dr. Hartman was working towards the release of his first book, and I knew I could help put visuals to what it is that sets him apart as a specialist.
And I also knew if he’d gone with any other brand photographer, he’d end up with photos at face value. Like “oh, he’s a doctor? Let’s photograph him with a patient, and a white lab coat, maybe a stethescope around his neck.
The results would be polite and, to be honest? Boring.
But that’s not how I work.
Instead, we flipped the session on its head and took our inspiration directly from who Dr. Hartman is as a father and a human. Let’s tell this story from the perspective of the people who inspired him to change directions from conventional → functional medicine.
The results were like nothing I’ve seen done before, and I could NOT be more proud of this one!
Aaron & Becky, thank you for allowing me into your home to create these photographs! Having a glimpse into your family life was so special, and it was extra special to meet and photograph your kids. You all have SUCH an intriguing story, and I’m so grateful the world can now have a glimpse into your journey with Uncurable!
Grateful to have had Katherine Bignon on for wardrobe + set styling for this one!
