No, today’s not about budgets. It’s about a HAIRCUT! I know people get their hair cut all the time, but I average… like, two cuts a year. Having long hair, that was about as frequently as I needed to get to get the ends cleaned up! But this time, I decided to go for something a little more drastic. Here’s the before!
You can tell the ends are in need of some serious TLC. And to be blunt, I wanted change. It takes me a long, LONG time to blow dry my hair, and letting it air dry typically takes a couple of hours. And it’s not like it looks amazing when I do let it air dry (see above), so I usually ended up throwing it into a side braid or messy bun. And while I do love my side braid, I wanted something that looks good on its own without any heavy styling. I have this lovely natural wave in my hair, but it’s almost never seen because I either put it up or end up styling the waves out of it!
So I chopped it off!
And boy was I nervous! I’d been growing my hair out for FIVE YEARS. You don’t just cut it all off without thinking about it! I spent last weekend with Katherine Bignon, who just cut her long locks into an adorable angled bob, and I loved how carefree it felt.
I’ve never been someone who likes spending a ton of time prepping before going out- the less I can do to my hair, the happier I am. And I really did miss my natural wave! Now, with the weight of my long hair gone, it can wave as much as it wants! It’s taking a bit of getting used to, and I’ve worried a bit that losing my long hair somehow makes me less “Abby Grace” than before. Which is totally stupid, because it’s not like chopping my locks all of a sudden means I’m any less old-school chic, any less of a French lover, any less talented as a photographer.
We took a total of 14″ off!
I’m still getting accustomed to it, which means I’ll do things put on a coat and then go to pull all my hair out from under the collar, only to realize it’s no there anymore. And brushing my hair the first time was weird- I put way too much force into it, expecting to have to drag my brush through waist-length hair, so I accidentally ended up throwing my brush on the ground. Oops!
All in all, I’m a happy camper. I’m excited that I’ll no longer have to budget a full hour to do my hair before leaving for a wedding day anymore, and that I can now play with styled that I previously couldn’t because my tresses were too long!

Ahh, that takes some courage! But your new look looks amazing 🙂
GAHHH YOU LOOK BEAUTIFUL!!!! I’m right there with you — my hair is my security blanket! But I agree, it’s such a stupid thought; your hair doesn’t make you any less you — if anything it made you even more of a B.A. in my opinion 🙂 🙂
Looks fantastic! Very chic 🙂
Abby!!!! You look amazing!!! I absolutely love it!!!!!!
You look gorgeous! Love the new ‘do!
Oh!!! So gorgeous!!!
You look fantastic!
I love it!
WHY ARE YOU SO PRETTY?!?!?!
Gah! It looks amazing on you! Love it! 🙂
Ahh I love it sooo much!!! So cute!
Love! I did the exact same thing. Last year, I cut 13″ off my hair and haven’t looked back! It has been so much easier to get ready for work, and I actually cut it so that I could wear my hair down and still be within uniform standards (I’m a flight attendant for an international airline). I would always see these women with their adorable bobs and think about how wearing it up in a bun was just getting old. My hair has grown out to the point I can’t really get away with it down for work anymore, but it’s still stinkin’ cute when I go out! Love your cut & the natural wave!
so pretty!!! love it!!
I LOVE IT! I wish I could cut my hair into this style but curly hair is a no go! I actually think this makes you somehow more sophisticated, french-y, and stylish? Weird I know but I love!
Ah! This looks gorgeous on you! (I adore that first photo of you!!!)
When I turned 30, I did the same thing – just chopped 12″ off and donated it. Now, 3 years later, it’s back down to my bum, and it’s about time to cut it again. I’m holding off, though…our 10-year renewal is in May. Then it’s time to do the chop chop!
Eeeeeek!! You are so brave and look BEYOND adorable!!! xoxo
Looks super cute, Abby!! <3
Abby! You are gorgeous! I love the new cut and how playful it is! My husband has been asking me to grow my hair again, but after cutting mine with flirty layers, I don’t know if I could ever grow it long again. Rock it out girl!
Abby!!!! Your hair looks SO good. Love it!! 🙂
Girl!! I love it! Looks fabulous!
ABBY! This is the best!!! Did you end up donating your locks? And I totally agree with your sentiments- as women, we tend to let our hair define us, which is beyond silly. You look beautiful no matter what, and no cut, makeup, or clothing will ever define your talent as a photographer! Nevertheless, you look so much lighter and happy as can be! Now go forth and spend the time you budgeted for hair to a photo shoot you’ve ALWAYS wanted to do- you deserve it! 🙂
So cute Abby!!!
It must be the season! I just cut off my waist-long hair on Saturday as well… oh, and brought my first RED lipstick for the first time! I read a GREAT quote while getting my hair cut– a woman who cuts her hair is about to change her life. (Coco Chanel) Go move mountains, linda. Move ‘um!
You look amazing!!! I would never be brave enough to chop it all off! You look good with both hairstyles! You’ll save a lot of money on shampoo and time drying your hair! I feel you on air drying and then just doing a side braid! That is my life! haha.
