France. I thought I was already as in love as I could be, but oh how wrong I was! I feel like I’ve only really scratched the surface of everything this stunning country has to offer, and this most recent trip with my dear friend Katherine Bignon was enough to prove that 100% correct.
So Katherine is married to a Frenchman (named Guillaume, which is about the French-est name I’ve ever heard), and they took a few weeks in January/February to go visit Guillaume’s family back home! And as G was leaving to head back to the US while Katherine & the kids still had a week and a half by themselves in France, she invited me to come along!
We began in Ascain, which is about 10 minutes from the Spain border. Even in winter, it was gorgeous- warm, sunny, and COLORFUL- so much different than what I’m accustomed to in Paris!
I’ve never traveled in France with anyone but Matt before, so coupling that with the new locations we explored and it was a completely unique European experience for me. We stayed with Katherine’s in-laws, so I had my first true experience in an authentic French home WITH a French family (instead of just in an AirBnb). It was so wonderful! I loved seeing how Hervé & Géneviève do life, meals, and relaxation. It reminded me how often I rush through things that ought to be taken slowly, like afternoons at the beach or post-lunch coffee.
During our few days in the south, we ventured out to Saint-Jean-de-Luz, Biarritz, the countryside of Ascain, and Bayonne (photos are in that order). Enjoy some of my favorite slices of life from French Basque Country!
