I remember discussing the issue of needing a little black dress with my old friend Maggie the summer after we graduated high school. “You have to have one,” she’d told me, “it’s a staple in every college girl’s wardrobe!” So off I went to Target (because that was the only place I shopped for clothes in high school) in search of the elusive LBD. The dress I bought that day carried me through dates, formals and banquets during my time at Radford, and incidentally, it’s the same dress I was wearing when Matt proposed!

I’ve since retired that particular dress in exchange for a newer one, and it’s my go-to when I don’t know what else to wear. My little black dress is appropriate for pretty much anything- I wore it to my bridal shower, two years’ worth of Christmas Eve services (at different churches, so no one knew :)), date nights with Matt, our session with Justin & Mary, etc. It’s my favorite thing in my closet because it’s flattering without being too form-fitting, and it goes with pretty much anything- pearls (my favorite), a chunky necklace, heels, flats, a blazer, a cardigan, everything. I always feel good when I wear it, so if nothing else in my closet feels right on a particular day, I know my LBD will do the job.

Last week, I was lucky enough to snag Rebekah to shoot my new business portraits to go along with a few tweaks we’re making to my website. We had a Skype date the day before so I could show her my various outfit ideas, and we both agreed that the black dress with pearls was a keeper. And sure enough, the majority of my favorite images from last week were in this dress. That Rebekah, she’s so smart!

What about you? Ladies, do you love your little black dress as much as I love mine?

  2. Kim Usowski says:

YES!!! Exact reason I chose the bridesmaid dresses that I did. And pearls = <3

  3. Would you believe that *gasp* I don’t have a LBD. It’s ridiculous in fact! I know that I should have one but I am so drawn to color and have never found one worthy of purchasing. Maybe I am shopping in the wrong stores…

  4. Tracy P says:

So funny…I just commented on your dress on your fb page last night! Love LBDs! Every girl needs one, or 3. Just be sure to also have a lint roller handy! And pearls or statement necklaces are a must!

  10. Rici says:

I totally love my LBDes! All of them are of course from Italia. 😉 I have at least four and change them, wear them all the time! If you ever get the chance to get to an “Intimissimi” store. Please check it out! they have the most wonderful dresses! I actually even sometimes wear some of them with jeans and ruffle them up a bit at the hip. No one knows and you can change during a long day or when temperature drops (like in Germany). The header of my blog image is also with a dress from “intimissimi” 😉
Have a nice day! ~ Saluti.

  13. Annamarie says:

You are beautiful!! And I totally agree…I think I have 5 LBD’s in my closet..which might defeat the point of having 1 LBD that’s suitable for any occasion…but if I dont know what to wear to a wedding I always end up in one of them!!

  14. M says:

    Abbigret,
I remember that conversation… I’m glad I actually ended up being right, I’m not sure at the time that I really knew what I was talking about. I’m really glad I stumbled across your blog, and that you seem to be doing so well!! I always worried that you wouldn’t find an outlet for all your style and creativity and I am so glad to see that you have absolutely found your niche. Your photographs are perfect. Best wishes!
