A few months ago I jotted down my top advice for blogging. Since then, I’ve come to realize there was more than needed to be on that list, so I’ve created another one! Blogging How-To, Part Deux.

1. If you’re including a link in your post, make sure to check the “open in new window” box so that if someone clicks on your link, it doesn’t take them away from the post they’re currently reading. People on the internet are easily distracted- you want to keep them on YOUR page. Giving them a link to different site is a great idea, but make sure your window is still open after they click a link on your page.

2. I’ve actually seen a few other wedding pros mention this- when you leave comments on someone elses blog, there’s a space provided for you to enter your website’s URL. There is therefore no need to leave an additional link to your blog within the body of your comment (i.e. “great post! very insightful! http://www.abbyisawesome.com”). It tends to come across that you’re only posting a comment to get visibility for your website, and it can annoy the blog owner.

3. Do get a spam filter! I was getting 10-20 spam comments per day on my blog. Since I opt to have all comments sent to me in emails, I was getting REALLY frustrated at receiving 10-20 emails from people commenting on my blog with links to holistic medicinal remedies, vaccuum retailers, and incredibly inappropriate sites. I now pay $5/month and Akismet has filtered out every single spam comment that’s come my way since then!

4. If you’re a professional business, do yourself a favor and get a “mybusinessname.com” address for your website and/or blog. Having a “.blogspot” or “.wordpress” site isn’t doing you any favors- it’s bad for SEO (aka you’ll have a harder time climbing up Google’s rankings). And, to be frank, wouldn’t you prefer to be promoting yourself at “yourbusinesname.com” instead of giving BlogSpot and WordPress all the props?

5. I choose to blog Monday-Friday, and I never post on the weekends. There are two reasons for this: a) I like having my weekends off, or as off as they can be when you’re a wedding photographer,  and 2) I’m much less likely to read blogs on a weekend, so I can only assume other people feel the same way. If I’m not shooting a wedding on a Saturday or Sunday, chances are I’m not at my desk. If I’m not at my desk, I’m most likely not going to read a blog post. I figure most people read blogs while they’re at work/during the school day, so if I want to have the maximum chance of reaching my audience, I save my posts for M-F.

6. Study your Facebook timeline- what time of day is the busiest? When do you see content updated the most frequently? Pay attention to your newsfeed, then choose to post during the times of day that you find to have the most traffic.

7. When posting images to your blog, be conscious about how long each image is. If you have to scroll up or down by two-three page lengths to view the length of an image, consider adjusting the photo’s dimensions. Not being able to see the image in one window length interrupts the viewing experience- I know I can’t appreciate the image in its entirety if it’s broken up and requires me to move the scroll bar up and down  several times to see the entire photo. I get super frustrated when I encounter this on photographers’ blog- I want to be able to see the ENTIRE image, not 1/3 of it at a time.

8. Limit your social media advertising of an individual post to 2-4 Tweets and 1-3 Facebook shares. You can definitely push that Tweet rule, but I’ve found that posting a link on Facebook too many times just results in it becoming white noise. If I have something I’m super excited about (like a huge feature on a national wedding blog or something), then I may push the Facebook rule as well, but for normal, every day blog posts, I limit myself to the above numbers. It helps people learn to trust that when they see me posting “new blog post!” that they’re not going to accidentally visit the same link they’ve already clicked on six times. The worst thing I can do for myself is to teach people to ignore my status updates because it’s always the same thing, over and over.

9. If you’re a frequent blogger, try to get into a pattern of posting at the same time each day. I used to be really good at this, but ever since I left my corporate job my consistency has slipped a bit. I need to get back to pre-blogging the day before so that I can have my blog posted at the goal time I’ve set for myself.

10. I know I said this in my last episode of Blogging tips, but COMMENT! I’ve had a few people ask how I manage to garner as many comments on my blog as I have, and I think a lot of it comes back to commenting on other photographer’s blog. I may stumble upon Jane Doe Photography’s site, see something I love, and leave a comment, causing Jane Doe’s interest to pique so that she comes to my blog and does the same. That’s not to say my main motivation in commenting on others’ blogs is that they’ll return the favor (I just really like spreading encouragement!) but it’s definitely an added bonus.

Lessons Learned: Blogging tips, part 2

  1. Nicole says:

Great tips! I secretly stalk many blogs (yours included) but never comment 🙁 So just saying hi today.

  2. Suzanne says:

Wow! 300! Go Abby! I feel ya on the whole 1-3 Facebook links kind of thing. It gets a bit annoying if my feed is filled with the same post over and over again. I think another good tip is an engaging thumbnail! I’m a visual person, and especially when I’m reading a photography blog, I want to see a beautiful photo to immediately grab my interest. It’s a great teaser as to what kind of photos I can expect to ooh and ahh over when I read the article.

  3. Elizabeth Victory says:

HAPPY 300!! How exciting! Gosh Abby, you have come so far and learned so much… and this post (along with your gorgeous work, of course) if proof of that. Congrats girl, and thanks for passing on your knowledge!

  4. Anna K. says:

So happy you found your ring and I absolutely love this post! So many helpful little nuggets of great information. I struggle with blogging and I ALWAYS feel like you are so consistent!

  5. Jean says:

Some great advice there. So glad your ring was found!

  6. Spring says:

Great advice as always 🙂 it has been so fun watching your blog and business grow over the past few year that I’ve been following you- and I swear to you I really will get to VA soon for that LONG overdue coffee! Xoxo

  7. Becky says:

Yay I’m so glad you got your ring back!! I can’t imagine how it would feel to lose mine. Oh and really great blogging tips =)

  8. Rici says:

Thank you for another one of your wonderful practical and helpful posts!!! I love them. It reminded me to keep on track and check back with my blog routine. I have the new Blog name on the to do list. Totally with you on this one! I don´t like it anymore to have .blogspot in there… I hope all is well with you AND congrats on your 300th! So happy for and with you!! Salutiiiii.

  9. i LOVE these tips. i think these can be applicable to ANY blogger, really. and i am with you on #2. that drives me CRAZY when people do that. or when people say “nice blog. FOLLOW ME.” ugh. hate that. love your tips, abby! and i love your blog cause you so fabulous!

  10. Amelia Renee says:

Oh my. I’m going to memorize this, I think!;) haha. Thank you so much for the wise words!

  11. Great post! Here’s something that made me feel really bad – I am a dedicated follower of your blog, but I don’t think I’ve ever left a comment! And you’re right, comments help you see your audience, and are encouraging too. So note to self: leave comments on the blogs I love! Great work Abby!

  12. Thanks for the great advice! I check your blog nearly everday (at work) but don’t think I have left a comment! Can’t wait to get the .blogspot out of my URL…it’s a work in progress!!

  13. Eek wow Abby, congrats! Your images are so lovely and it’s always so fun to see your posts every day!

  14. Wendy says:

Great advice!!! I SO need to get back into regular blogging! You always inspire me to blog since you’re SO great at it. Keep up the great work!

  15. Congratulations on 300, Abby! I love reading your blog and now that I’ve been blogging 5 times per week, this is an especially helpful post!! Thanks..as always!

  16. Carrie Logan says:

YES! this is perfection. and yay for 300!! that represents so much more than a number and i hope you’re super proud of yourself for all that you’re accomplishing 🙂

  17. Hello,
I loved this post and I just have a question for you and anyone who can read my comment. So, I like reading blogs but I do not like writing. I do not have a blog for my business. How important is a blog for a business like yours? Does it effect it if you do not blog? I would appreciate any insight.

    Thank you.

  18. Great post Abby! I totally agree with everything you said about blogging and I definitely need to make it a habit of posting consistently and early on in the day! Since I’m still new to blogging I’m really pushing myself to be consistent and blog Mon-Fri!!

  19. Thanks for the tips – I am so not consistent at blogging & I know I have to be on top of it… so thanks for the great tips + kick in the butt motivation 🙂

  20. admin says:

Lamia- if you don’t like blogging, don’t feel pressured to have one. If you can recognize that as an area that you’re going to struggle with, I’d say it’s better NOT to have a blog than to have one that you never update (therefore teaching people that visiting your page is a waste of time due to the lack of new material). Blogging isn’t for everyone and that’s totally fine! I’d suggest you try keeping up with your audience in some way though; Facebook business pages are GREAT for that!

  21. Urška says:

Love this posts and oh how would i love to read about that spam thing before we started our own wordpress blog. At first it was like 2 or 3 spam comments in a week then all of a sudden we got 10,000 spam comments. And i don’t know who will erase all those comments 😀

  22. Laura Barnes says:

Thanks for sharing! I never thought of some of these great points before – they will be helpful!!

  23. Katie Glovac says:

This post is almost three years old (Sept. 5 is actually my birthday!) but it has such great tips in it that are still completely relevant! Thanks so much for all your help Abby!
