I LOVE seeing “What’s in my bag?” posts on other photographers’ blogs- it’s fun to compare and contrast which different types of glass they use, what radio systems, what kinds of flashes, etc. Those posts also make me feel inadequate about my own supply of equipment, but I have to remind myself that every photographer is completely different, and that I’m still growing!

So in the spirit of participation, here is my own humble “What’s in my bag?” post.

We begin with my camera bodies! The 5dmkii, the body on the right, is my regular weapon of choice. I have the 5d (on the left) as my back-up, but the mkii is such a sweet piece of equipment. I LOVE that thing.

Next up is my 50mm f/1.2L portrait lens. It’s my FAVORITE lens that I’ve ever had on my camera and if I could, I’d keep it on my mkii allllll the day long. The way it renders color is just phenomenal. Most of my portraits are taken with my 50.

This next one is my 35mm f/1.4L wide angle lens. My 50 is awesome, but sometimes it’s a bit of a squeeze in a bridal suite where everyone’s getting ready and the 50 becomes too close, so I pop this sucker on and I’m instantly satisfied. It’s also great for when I want a nice WIDE portrait, featuring the environment as well the subject.

I managed to kid myself for about 8 months that I didn’t need a macro lens (n00b mistake), but I can’t take a proper ring shot without one. I’ve come to adore my 100mm f/2.8L macro lens! It allows me to get REALLY close up to rings, flowers, anything with tiny print, etc. I can’t shoot details without this guy anymore.

And here we have to 70-200 f/2.8L zoom lens. It’s not my favorite lens because of how heavy it is, but it’s crucial for me to be able to feel comfortable shooting a ceremony. I can get up nice and close to the bride and groom without even stepping down the aisle- it allows me to remain as subtle as possible while still getting the intimate images I’m after.

I’m kind of a mess when it comes to external lighting, but my 580 EXIIs are awesome. It’s embarrassing how little I know about manipulating them (i.e. I only just learned what ETTL means a few weeks ago), however I’m slowly but surely learning to navigate my way through the world of VERY basic external lighting.

PocketWizards! I just bought these a couple of weeks ago and though I haven’t completely mastered their use (I think it’s the sync cord’s fault), I’m getting there! I have the Flex TT5 for on-camera and the PlusII to connect to a 580 EXII off-camera. I need a bit more practice but so far, they’re pretty awesome!

What’s in my bag?

YAY! Now you need a post about sync cords specifically!

  2. Sigh, I wish I knew more about any of that! I feel so inadequate in my knowledge of equipment. Don’t worry, I am sure your bag will grow quicker than you know!

  3. Ashley says:

Man, I wish I knew what most of that stuff was 😛
Looks like a very professional bag if stuff if you ask me!

  4. Justin Ferry says:

It’s funny that when you look at other people’s equipment you are reminded of what you desire in your own bag. I am taking a few notes from your post in the “soon to purchase” department.

  5. Beth Hamilton says:

I love reading “what’s in my bag” posts too! Thanks for sharing Abby!

  6. Jean Hensley says:

Some great equipment, there, and you get great results. Of course you know how to use it to get those great pictures. Love the pics of Pawpaw’s dad and family. Thanks!

  7. Joe says:

Thanks so much for sharing! I have to admit, seeing so many Canon shooters with that 50 1.2L makes me a bit jealous. I absolutely love my d700’s and all of the awesome Nikon lenses I have but the photos you guys get out of those 50mm’s are always incredible!

  8. Serena says:

Thanks for sharing, Abby! I LOVE the 50mm f/1.2… awesome, awesome lens! <3

  9. Anastasia says:

I have a case of the camera bag jealousy right now! The 70-200 is on my list of what to buy next, and then the 35mm 1.4. Thank you for sharing Abby, I always enjoy having a peek at what other photogs shoot with 🙂 x

  10. Brittani says:

I also love seeing what photographers have in their bags 🙂 It’s kind of nice to hear your experience with external lighting…it’s something I’m JUST starting to figure out and play with and it really makes me feel like a moron haha. Practice practice practice I guess! 🙂

  11. Kacey Wolters says:

What bag do you use? Kelly Moore? Shoot Sac? Just curious. Just purchased the lavender b-hobo bag from Kelly Moore. Can’t wait!!! It’ll match all my branding.

  12. […] favorites, and which lenses they’d rather do without. Since I’ve already blogged my major equipment (it may need to be updated soon, though), I thought it’d be fun to show y’all the […]
